Improving care for head and neck cancer patients

Managing jaw necrosis after radiotherapy and clinical nurse specialist (CNS) mapping were the focus of the recent LCA head and neck clinical forum on 17 November 2015.

The afternoon opened with a presentation on the findings from the CNS mapping audit that was undertaken at the beginning of 2015 by Professor Alison Leary, Chair of Healthcare and Workforce Modelling, London South Bank University. This was followed by a presentation from Dr Mary Lei, clinical oncologist from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, on their experience in completing treatment summaries for oncology head and neck patients.

To close the day Dr Vinod Patel shared the Guy’s and St Thomas’ model for managing osteoradionecrosis (ORN) patients in a dedicated jaw necrosis clinic. The clinic has been running for a year with the main objective of managing all patients at risk of or with established ORN in a consistent manner with multidisciplinary input. Dr Patel is undertaking ongoing research into the prevalence, risk factors and options for management of ORN.

Attendees undertook a review of the treatment summaries for chemo/radiotherapy, oral cavity/free flap surgery and laryngectomy. All the comments and content suggestions will be collated from the day and circulated to enable the development and use of treatment summaries locally in each Trust.
