Forum on the challenges of lung cancer

The first lung pathway group forum, on 5 February 2013, focused on the challenge of improving survival. The event was attended by over 70 stakeholders including GPs, clinical nurse specialists, patient users and cancer managers.

Key speaker topics included:

  • The challenges of the lung pathway group
  • Lung cancer screening
  • Research in the LCA
  • Improving diagnosis - the challenge of making an earlier diagnosis
  • A commissioning overview

Dr Tuck-Kay Loke, consultant chest physician at Croydon and pathway group member, introduced the draft clinical guidelines. Attendees were able to comment on the document as part of the consultation with the wider LCA community.

Round table discussions looked at other issues that will affect the future structure and priorities of the lung pathway, such as structure and membership, communication with multi-disciplinary teams and other stakeholders, patient user involvement, and earlier diagnosis.

The pathway group is now reviewing the discussion and feedback, to incorporate it into its work plan for 2013/14, and to develop an appropriate structure between MDTs and the pathway group.
