Benefits of an integrated cancer system

Dr Kate Haire, LCA clinical commissioning lead, Dr Cathy Burton, cancer and end of life Macmillan GP, and Professor Arnie Purushotham, LCA Clinical Director, have co-written an article for the peer-reviewed London Journal of Primary Care 2013;6:7-12 on developing cancer services in London. Other authors include Robert Park, network director North East London, Julia Reynolds of Macmillan Cancer Support, and former cancer patient Derek Stewart.

The article's key messages are that integrated cancer systems have the potential to transform the current model of cancer care; that better integrated delivery can improve quality, reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes; and that commissioners and providers will need to work more closely together to achieve effective integration of services.

The web-based journal is published by the Royal College of General Practitioners for professionals working in primary care. You can read the full article here.
