Introduction to the pathway group

The oesophago-gastric pathway working group aims to improve access, experience and outcomes for patients with oesophago-gastric cancer in south and west London. The membership of the group brings together specialist expertise from primary, secondary and tertiary care as well as patients and users of the service to enable development of high quality patient centred care.

The oesophago-gastric pathway group supports the aims and objectives of the London Cancer Alliance in providing world class cancer services across south and west London. It aims to improve cancer patients' experience and outcomes through delivering excellence in clinical care, research, innovation and education with particular emphasis on earlier diagnosis for oesophago-gastric cancer.

Objectives

  • Draw on the highest levels of expertise in its decision making.
  • Undertake a baseline audit to assess current performance of pathways within the LCA with regard to outcomes, model of care recommendations and best practice.
  • Develop improvement plans and make recommendations for improvement to the Clinical Board.
  • Agree and establish current best practice, and develop an exemplar best practice pathway.
  • Ensure the appropriate level of engagement with patients, primary care and other key stakeholders, such as public health.
  • Improve cancer patients' experience and outcomes by delivering excellence in clinical care, research, innovation and education with particular emphasis on earlier diagnosis for oesophago-gastric cancer.
  • Improve access to care across the patient pathway with particular emphasis on referral patterns between primary care, cancer units and cancer centres.
  • Merge existing network guidelines for each cancer network within the LCA to produce a single document used across the LCA.
  • Be compliant with peer review requirements.

Targets

The pathway group is developing a number of service standards that ensure excellence in patient centred care and clinical effectiveness.
